10 Things You’ll Need in Your Autumn-Focused Makeup Bag
Fall beauty — acting in tandem with fall fashion — is all about deeper shades, layering color, and being simultaneously edgy and soft. Just as our closets need a refresh for the change of seasons, so do our makeup bags. Here are the top ten items that will keep you looking beautiful this fall:
1. Berry lip color. Fall is the time to play with deeper shades, and really define your pout. The latest rage right now is the matte lip, but if you’d prefer a gloss with some shine, then go for it!
2. Brown eyeliner. Since you may be going for bolder lips, it’s important to have balance and keep the eyes soft, but still defined. If you’re not a fan of brown, try gray or navy.
3. Neutral blush. When eyes and lips are making a statement, keep your cheeks subtle with a blush that casts a natural flush.
4. Soft highlight. As the weather turns colder, our complexions tend to get dry and dull. Besides drinking lots of water to get a glow, you can invest in a highlight to place on the tops of your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, under your eyebrows, and above your lip. You can still have your summer glimmer in the fall.
5. Contour powder. Hint: Don’t use your bronzer to contour — bronzing is meant to mimic the sun, and give you a warm glow, whereas contouring is meant to mimic the natural shadows of your face, and make certain features recede (e.g. cheekbones, sides of nose, or forehead). So choose one with cool undertones. If your contour is too warm, it will look oompa-loompa-style unnatural!
6. Tinted lip balm. When the air is crisp, it’s important to keep lips hydrated. Carry your favorite lip balm with you at all times, and it doesn’t hurt to have one with a hint of color when you’re on- the-go.
7. Facial mist. This keeps your makeup from looking cakey, and gives a nice refresher to the face, especially if you’re plagued with dry skin. The right one will not disturb your foundation…so just spritz, and let it settle.
8. Beauty blender. This gem can be used to apply foundation, but it’s also a useful blending tool to carry with you in case you notice your makeup getting patchy throughout the day.
9. Dramatic mascara. Personally, I love a good mascara that I can wear year-round. But if you like a more natural look during the spring and summer, take it up a notch for the chillier months with a volumizing version. While you’re wearing a deep lip and soft eyes, making your eyelashes stand out is gorgeous!
10. Deep nail polish. After a summer of pastels, neon and nudes, fall is the time to go bold with navy or crimson. These darker shades are most flattering on shorter nails, so consider a trim for the new season.
