In Honor of Black History Month
Shirley Chisholm left her mark by becoming the first black woman elected to Congress in 1968 and represented New York’s 12th Congressional District for seven terms. In January 1972, she became the first major party black candidate for President of the United States and the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Although she didn’t win, she received 152 first-ballot votes that year at the Democratic National Convention. After her retirement from Congress, she went on to continue her career in education, teaching politics and women’s studies.
“You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.” -Shirley Chisholm
