5 Fall Work Staples to Add to Your Office Wardrobe for Style Success This Season
The Autumn season marks the official transition from warm weather clothes and accessories to cold weather essentials. And as the leaves turn dark shades of red, yellow, and orange, so do the colors in your wardrobe. Deciding which pieces for Fall are necessary staples and what pieces to add to align to new trends can be tricky, so we’ve pulled together some of our top office staples for the Fall season.
Office Essentials for Fall
- Boots – It’s officially boot season! Women everywhere are rejoicing. A new pair of boots (or two or three or four…) is an absolute must. Here are some recommended styles and how to add them to your office wardrobe (Pro Tip: boots tend to run a little large, so consider ordering a half-size down):
- Classic Black Boot – if you don’t already have a black boot or your black boots from last year are worn out, it’s time to purchase a new pair. A classic black boot with a pointed toe and a sleek heel can replace your favorite black pumps for any office style (except a business suit). Pair them with your favorite office dress or pencil skirt. Our favorites: Nine West Calla Boots, Charles David Superstar, Nine West Okena, Charles David Ebony (great wedge heel), Nine West Holdtight.
- Brown Boots – if you’re already set on black boots this season, then a great pair of brown boots is the way to go. Add either in a classic style to pair with a dress or skirt or riding boots to wear with jeans to your office wardrobe. Our favorites: Classic: Massimo Matteo, Nine West Calla Riding Boots: Sesto Meucci Waft, Vince Camuto Bendra, Steve Madden Laceup, Naturalizer Wynnie, Kork-Ease Levin, Ariat Stoneleigh H2O, Sebago Nashoba, Cole Haan Evren.
- Snow Boots – for those commuting to work in the snow, it’s a good idea to have a trendy pair of snow boots. Although, you’ll want to swap them out for heels at the office, you still want them to look fashionable (hint – keep your heels at your desk and wear your snow boats to and from work). Our favorites: Clarks Carima Pluma, Tretorn Harriet, Baffin Como, Aetrex Berries Tall, SOREL 1964, Baffin Dana, Michael Kors Quilted Rain Boot, ECCO GORE-TEX Boot.
- Booties – adding a great pair of little booties to your office wardrobe is a smart choice. Black booties paired with tights can replace your black pumps for a fall/winter feel and brown booties can be paired with your favorite casual Friday jeans. Our favorites: Chinese Laundry Song Bird, Nine West Paganeli, Nine West Cadence 2, Lucky Brand Yelloh.
- Tights – the fall and winter seasons are a great time to add tights to your office wardrobe. Pair them with your classic boots or booties and don’t hesitate to add fun patterns to add a little style to your ensemble (Pro Tip: no panties required).
- Classic Black – Semi Opaque Control Tights, Eclipse Blackout Tights, Plush Fleece-Lined Foot Tights, Spanx Tight-End Tights, Spanx Luxe Leg Tights.
- Fun Patterns – Cable Knit, Diamond Rib, Chevron Tights, Fineline Ribbed, Herringbone, Diamond Weave, Double Rib, Large Diamond.
- Coat – a fall and winter coat are an obvious necessity for cold weather seasons. But many winter coats have been a go-to for over a decade without updating, upgrading or differentiating. If your go-to winter coat is over five years old, it’s time for a new coat. Your style has changed and fashion trends have likely changed as well. Also, you can likely now afford to purchase a higher quality coat than you could five years ago. You might also want a couple of choices. If you already have a black and winter white coat, consider adding a pop of color with a red or blue coat (Pro Tip: Don’t skimp on quality. The higher the quality — wool, real down, etc.– the warmer the coat). A few of our favorite coats:
- Classic Black Coat – the classic black coat is the go-to for your cold weather wardrobe. Make sure to invest in quality, because you will own and use your classic black coat for at least five years. Diane von Furstenberg’s Wool Wrap is warm and trendy option.
- Puffer Coat – Puffer coats were popular on the Fall 2016 runway this year. The key to a good puffer coat is high quality, so they’re as thin (and warm) as possible and a cinched waist. The North Face Quilted Long Jacket is a good example of a puffer coat that is a classic look, but won’t make you look huge. And the Vince Camuto Down coat with a cinched waist can add a pop of color.
- Military Style Coat – The military style coat was also very popular on the Fall runway. The military style is a great addition if you already have a go-to black coat. Consider a navy blue or a pop of red. Ralph Lauren Navy Military Coat.
- Oversized Tote – a large tote is a must for your office wardrobe, but during the cold season your tote will be filled to the brim with extra accessories, from scarves, gloves and even a pair of heels to swap out at the office, so make sure to have an oversized one for the cold season. Pick a tote that is a mix of style and functionality. Take a look at some options from Zappos: Totes; Vince Camuto Burgundy Tote, (We also really like this backpack in a fall inspired wine)
- Scarves – adding a scarf to your fall or winter wardrobe is the perfect accessory. Considering purchasing two to three scarfs that speak to your personality, but also can be worn with your favorite go-to office outfits.
- Pop of Color – a pop of color like a red or rusty orange to match your pumpkin spiced latte.
- Wool – if you’re in a northern state, you’ll need a wool scarf. Don’t set aside fashion for warmth, you can have both. There great wool, fashion-forward scarves for your office commute. A couple of our favorites: Jon Varvatos Red Abstract Print and Ralph Lauren Black Cashmere Scarf.
After you’ve covered your bases with cold weather necesities, consider adding some Fall inspired colors to your office wardrobe. Burgundy, dark orange, and deep blue hues paired with black or brown accessories are the go-to colors this season.
