Wearable Hair and Makeup Trends from NY Bridal Fashion Week
New York Bridal Fashion Week just finished showing the Spring 2016 collection in April. The good news for non-brides: you don’t have to planning a wedding to wear the beauty trends, since the hair and makeup are generally more focused on beauty — versus trendy fashion — due to the nature of the event. It is more about the everyday woman (after all, any woman can be a bride!), and not so much the six-feet tall, size zero model who looks great in everything.
In other words, these are real-life trends that anyone, bride or not, can wear in a flattering, fashionable manner: luminous skin, coral or pink/red lips, and loosely un-done hairstyles, as seen on the runways for Hailey Page, Lazaro, Maggie Sottero and Claire Pettibone.
Lovely, Luminous Looks
MG Hair and Makeup created a look for Kelly Faetanini’s runway that was an inspired take on Greek mythological muses. The skin was luminous, as were the eyelids, and there was little definition to the eyes or lashes, leaving them more natural. The lips were a pink-rose color, and the cheeks had a slight flush to bring a youthful glow to the face. The hair was an un-done, loose ponytail with a little volume to the top.
To achieve this glowing, ultra-feminine look off the runway, all you need is some moisturizer and loose shimmer powder, like OCC’s Loose Colour Concentrates in Flicker, which is a beige/gold color. Apply moisturizer to your face and if needed, a BB cream or lightweight foundation to even out your skin. Then, dust on some powder to set the makeup — but not too much, as you want a dewy finish to the skin.
Add some blush in bright pink tone but be sure to only add a little for this look. Next, take the shimmer powder with an eyeshadow fluff brush and apply to the lid from your lashline to your crease. You can also add a little under your brow bone, and as a highlight on your cheekbone to accent this area of the face.
Lastly, take a setting spray like Make Up For Ever’s Mist and Fix and spray your face. Then take a sponge and dab the spray into your makeup. The result will be a lasting dewy finish. Finally, apply a pink-rose or coral toned lipstick, and blot for a natural-looking stain to the lips.
The How-to’s of a Chic Ponytail
For the loose ponytail, first blow dry the top section of hair with a round brush, and either let it set using the brush as a roller or use a roller attachment like Casual Curl, which attaches to your hair dryer. This adds volume at the root for this top/middle section of the hair. You can also apply a mousse like Living Proof’s Full Thickening Mousse to add texture and volume if you have fine textured hair.
Next, remove the roller or brush, and gently tease the top section before pulling the hair back into a ponytail. Add hairspray as needed. Lastly, spray the ponytail with hairspray and lightly tease near the base next to the elastic holding the ponytail together. You can also pull out some loose pieces to frame your face.
Add Imaginative Hair Accessories
The other big trend was hair accessories. Galia Lahav and Naeem Kahn had beautiful, ornate crowns; Reem Acra showcased pearl-infused braids; Mira Zwillinger added tall, feather headpieces as a flourish, and Claire Pettibone sported black cowboy hats on her models. Whatever the occasion and whatever the accessory, adding something special to your hairstyle brings a modern touch, whether for a wedding day or every day.
Whatever you choose, the real beauty of these bridal-inspired trends is that anyone can achieve them regardless of technical skill in hair and makeup. You don’t have to be a makeup artist or hairstylist to pull these off. In fact, the “effortless, less-than-perfect” aspect of these looks gives them charm and makes them what they are.
