Why Mothers are Good at Managing and Multitasking
Last year, the Huffington Post reported that working moms have increased by 800% since 1860. And although times may have changed since then, a working mom’s skills have not: moms have always been natural leaders and managers, because being a mother already means that you are responsible for more than just yourself. If you weren’t good at managing other human beings before having a child, you will certainly learn how to do it after having one!
The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) released a report in February called the “2015 State of Modern Motherhood Report” that noted that 83% of new moms are millennials. The report went on to say that 65% of women who have children under six work, and are much more likely to do so than their own mothers. In fact, this figure is twice that of the previous generation.
So at work and in the office, more and moms are proving themselves as all-around great managers — and here’s why:
Working Moms Multi-Task
At home, managing your family means that you must find efficient ways of doing things and that you have to juggle multiple tasks at one time. According to the same IAB report cited above, one in four modern moms do half or more of their shopping online, and eight out of ten “millennial moms” in the U.S. use their phone for shopping while in a store!
So when a working mom is at work and has a lot of duties, she knows how to multitask and automatically looks for ways to “kill two birds with one stone.” Time is limited, and time is money, so a working mom must maximize the time that she has to get the most amount of work produced — which leads to the next point.
Working Moms Don’t Waste Time
As a working mom, you can’t waste time. Period. A working mom knows that wasting time will only lead to an overload of work later. Therefore, she will make proper use of every day, hour, minute and even every second. The IAB report also stated that nine+ hours are added to a U.S. modern mom’s workday, and that there are thirteen fewer hours in the day for herself.
Working Moms are Not Petty
Working moms don’t sweat the small stuff; they focus on important matters, and stick to that. Why? Because of their finely honed time-budgeting skills.
Working Moms Prioritize
The IAB report also asked modern mothers which criteria are most important when making everyday purchases. The response? 77% cited “safety,” and 64% said “brands that provide good value.” Moms have to put first things first — so at work, when managing many projects, a working mom knows that she must put items in order of importance. She will get through what needs to be done now, and keep an eye on other projects that she will have some time left to complete later.
Working Moms Know How to Correct Bad Behavior
A mom is always teaching her kids the basics, including how to be polite and nice. To do this, she must set a positive example. At work and in the office, moms know to be positive. Correcting bad behavior isn’t easy and may require a straightforward discussion — something that working moms are used to at home. So they tend not to be shy about dealing with it at work.
Working Moms Know How to Guide Others
Working moms are also great role models for their children. It’s true. A new study from Harvard Business School found that daughters of working moms grow up to be more successful in the workplace among peers, are found to earn more, and are more likely to be bosses. Likewise, sons of working mothers are more likely to contribute to childcare and household chores growing up.
Motherhood is leadership, including leading by example. Kids will mimic what their parents do. So, as a working mom, you must know how to lead colleagues, and how to be good example for others. Working moms know how to train, organize, and delegate tasks as necessary.
Working Moms Have Eyes in the Back of Their Heads
Kids, especially small children, require constant attention. You have to always keep your eyes on them and be ready for anything. Working moms are extra-observant and can see everything, because their children train them to be that way! It also makes them quick to react to a wide variety of situations.
