In the movie, the career woman’s lifestyle is thrown for a loop when she gains custody of her cousin’s baby. After some adjustment, she finds a balance between being a mother and launching her own successful business.
Judy Bernly, Violet Newstead, Doralee Rhodes
Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton star in the 1980 comedy, Nine to Five, that addresses the serious issue of sexism in the workplace. Judy (Jane Fonda), is a newcomer to the office after leaving her husband. Violet (Lily), is a widow with four kids and a 12-year veteran at Consolidated Companies. Doralee (Dolly Parton), is subjected to rumors of having an affair with their piggish boss, Frank Hart. The three form a friendship, successfully lock Hart in his own house, and implement new practices at the company that increases productivity and profits. The film itself is rated in the American Film Institute’s “100 Funniest Movies,” inspired an ‘80s TV series and was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2009.
Lois Lane
Although rescued several times during the 1978 film Superman:The Movie, the comic book-based character Lois holds her own as a reporter at the Daily Planet newspaper. Played by Margot Kidder, Lane is unimpressed with her colleague Clark Kent.
Miranda Priestly
The editor-in-chief does what it takes to run a successful magazine in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada. The icy powerhouse is perfectly portrayed by Meryl Streep, whose filmography lists so many other movies with strong female leads. The Priestly character is rumored to be inspired by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who is known to be emotionally distant as well as a legendary career woman.
