Gen Y Paralegal, Lindsay Summers, Tells All About Her Fashion Inspiration
The search for that one perfect outfit. It’s why we read InStyle or flip through look-books. But fashion inspiration doesn’t stop with fashion magazines. Many of today’s best-dressed women in business are gathering ideas and style tips from on-screen characters, personalities and even real life award shows.
Today we highlight Lindsay Summers. An immigration paralegal and project manager with a New Orleans-based immigration law firm, Summers currently resides in Seattle.
The Gen Y paralegal began working at a Washington D.C. law firm only two months after graduating. She’s considered herself a self-sufficient businesswoman ever since.
Summers credits two women whose wardrobes she’s modeled her own look after.
“Without question if you could give me anyone in Hollywood’s closet it would be Nicole Richie,” Summers told SharpHeels. “Her style is sleek. It’s fashionable, it’s perfectly tailored; it’s the ‘every look’ flawlessly done.”
Blake Lively’s Gossip Girl alter ego Serena van der Woodsen comes in at a close second for Summers. “[Her fashion] is the main reason I couldn’t stop watching the show – the hair, the shoes, the scarfs, the dresses, the most!” says Summers. With Serena’s Kate Moss meets Upper East Side look it’s no wonder that the character’s signature style easily translates into a perfect work to happy hour look.
As for women in business, Summers believes that things they are a-changing. From pantsuits to sleeveless tops and “fun footwear” the working woman has more variety in her wardrobe these days. “Plus, with the lines of gender conformity becoming more and more blurred in the workplace, wearing a bow-tie with your button-up will hopefully become more and more acceptable,” adds Summers.
So what fashion tips does Summers live by? “Confidence is just key – not to sound like an advice columnist,” jokes the paralegal. “If you want to rock something, you have to know that you can. If you don’t love it, then don’t wear it, because if you feel uncomfortable it will show more than your actual outfit.”
Another tip? “If it doesn’t fit, do not wear it,” she says. “You’re not walking around with your pants size glued to your forehead so if you can button an 8, but a 10 looks flawless, go up a size.”
Lastly, Summers’ believes that everyone needs either a friend who can sew or just a great tailor. “Sadly, I have found myself judging many an interviewee as I watch them try not to trip while they walk in pants that are about 4 inches too long.”
That’s Lindsay Summers’ fashion influences – tell us, whose look are you inspired by?
