Louise Marsaa Does It All
An Atlanta-based, pediatric speech-language pathologist, Marsaa received her masters from the University of Virginia in 2004 and has considered herself a businesswoman ever since. Over the years her career has led her into various work settings – including private practice and home health. But today, Marsaa works with Georgia’s youth at the inpatient rehabilitation unit within Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Having spent the last nine years at one of the country’s top pediatric hospitals, this speech-language pathologist, SLP for short, says she can’t help but notice a change within the medical field.
“In the hospital setting, where I work, male and female physicians, therapists, nurses – everyone is treated with the same respect,” says Marsaa. “I believe that shows, such as Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, have helped change the stereotype that men are physicians and women are nurses.”
And she doesn’t believe that this change is limited to hospital staff alone. “Over the years, women have become much more respected in the business world. I think they are no longer thought of as inferior. It’s wonderful.” However, while Marsaa credits hospital dramas for helping create a more balanced work environment, Meredith Grey is not one of her fashion icons.
Instead, she models her professional look after a combination of Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge and Reese Witherspoon. “The two of them have very classic styles, and they always look put together and confident. Kate and Reese do a great job with the classic look without being boring and matronly,” explains Marsaa.
Like Witherspoon and Middleton, Marsaa’s look is timeless. Her stores of choice include J.Crew, Banana Republic, and the British Boden, all of which offer quintessential pieces along with tasteful en vogue styles. “I appreciate the subtle details in the way [Reese and Kate] dress, which really adds the extra dimension to fashion.”
So how does this speech therapist and full-time mother nail her classic look? She recommends reading blogs, subscribing to fashion magazines, and paying attention to coworkers, and other professionals. “This really helps me to keep up with the trends,” she laughs.
“I love adding a pop of color with cute jewelry or handbags. For summer, fun nail polish is also a great way to add interest to your wardrobe,” Marsaa explains. “One thing I love about fashion is that it’s always changing, but you still need that little black dress and other classic staples in your closet!”
