Good news Friends fans – Marta Kauffman, the woman who created the well-loved sitcom of the nineties is at it again. And this time she’s reuniting Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin.
It’s been several decades since Fonda and Tomlin last worked together on the cult-classic Nine to Five, but the well-loved duo will be together again as Grace and Frankie, long-time nemeses whose husbands fall in love with each other.
“Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are among the funniest and most formidable actresses ever,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer in Wednesday’s press release. “It’s an incredible privilege to give them the opportunity to run riot on Netflix.”
While most people are excited about the onscreen reunion of the two iconic actresses, we’re also delighted by the number of women working on this series. While Kauffman, who recently started More Horses Productions with Robbie Tollin, is the show’s co-creator (with Howard J. Morris); Grace and Frankie’s executive producer is Paula Weinstein of Skydance Productions.
And Weinstein is no stranger to Hollywood, or unconventional television. As a producer she’s worked on the television movie, Too Big to Fail, which was nominated for three Golden Globes, and several other made-for-tv films, including Truman and Recount, both of which won Emmy Awards. As a film producer, Weinstein stands behind The Perfect Storm, and Blood Diamond among others. Currently she’s also producing Ron Howard’s This is Where I Leave You starring Fonda, and Tina Fey. It’s a small Hollywood world.
Fonda and Tomlin will also lend a hand as producers, as well as Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross. “Working with the wonderfully talented Marta, Jane, Lily, Howard and their producer Paula Weinstein is a dream come true,” Ellison said in the press release. “The story they have crafted is both hilarious and heartfelt.”
Airing in 2015, the 13-episodes of Grace and Frankie will be added to the Netflix originals’ catalog alongside House of Cards and Orange is The New Black. But the best news of all? The entire season will be made available all at once. Binge watches be warned!
