How Business Travel and Leading Women in Television Inspired Robyn Mishkin’s Professional Wardrobe
Robyn Mishkin knew she was a bona fide businesswoman once she began traveling for work. The realization came to her when she noticed she was among the masses of professionally attired business travelers wading through airport security on Monday mornings.
“I realized that I was joining the rest of the business travelers in work attire on planes,” Mishkin explains. The Deloitte & Touche LLP Senior Manager works with the power, utility, and telecom industries assisting with Internal Controls Assessments and IT audit services. Like many of her consultant cohorts, Mishkin’s clients can be found throughout the country, however, her home branch of Deloitte is located in Boca Raton, Florida.
A couple years back, and soon after she received her travel badge, Mishkin was promoted to Senior Consultant. That’s when she knew there was no turning back. “At that point I was comfortable with what I was doing, and had the confidence that goes along with declaring yourself a businesswoman.”
As both a professional and a mother, Mishkin is acutely aware of women’s changing role in the media, especially in regards to positions of power. “Women are not just in the peripheral roles any more, but are more integral characters,” says the consultant. “Just look at shows like Veep, where, instead of the woman’s role being limited to the president’s secretary or wife, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is playing the Vice President. As a mother of a young girl, this is so important, and quite refreshing.”
Of course, with changing roles comes a changing wardrobe. Mishkin admits she’s also noticed how the “costumes” for Hollywood’s businesswomen characters has also improved. As for her personal style influencers, two of televisions well-dressed leading ladies stand out.
On HBO’s mini-movie, The Newsroom, “Olivia Munn [Sloan Sabbith] wears some great dresses,” says Mishkin. “Her look is both professional and modern.”
Unsurprisingly, Mishkin names Robin Wright’s Claire Underwood as her other celebrity-style icon. “I’ve definitely been a huge fan of Robin Wright’s styling in House of Cards,” she explains. “Her clothing fits perfectly, and really portrays her personality. The pieces she wears are never flashy, but she always looks amazing – and strong – in them.”
Like most fashion-inclined women, Mishkin believes that tailoring is an important part of fashion. “Your clothes must fit well,” she advises. “Don’t be afraid to get something tailored.” As for her second styling tip: “I always add color, or a good piece of jewelry.”
