And the 2014 Emmy Nominees Are…
Last week’s announcement of the 2014 Emmy nominations has left the majority of television fans talking about Game of Thrones, but not us. While the HBO fantasy-drama garnered 19 nominations, the ladies of network, cable, and Netflix have taken some serious ground. In fact, SharpHeels’ favorite small-screen women are up TV’s top honor.
The category for Lead Actress in a Drama Series is so heavily stacked we can’t decide whom we’re rooting for. Of the six women nominated, four of our favorite leading ladies from fall of 2013 received nods, including Claire Danes (Homeland), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Robin Wright (House of Cards). The additional actresses are Lizzy Caplan of Showtime’s Masters of Sex, and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey).
Though we’ve loved Dockery since the first season of Downton, she officially won us over this past season when she started taking an active role in the family’s estate. In season four, Dockery showed viewers what a newly minted businesswoman looked like circa 1923.
The UK import and Masterpiece classic has received 12 nominations in total, including two supporting actress nods (Maggie Smith and Joanne Froggatt), and Best Drama Series in which it will go up against Netflix’s House of Cards. Cards – which walked away with 13 lucky nods, is also up for Best Casting of a Drama Series, and, maybe we’re biased, but we couldn’t agree more. Alongside Wright, Kate Mara, who played ruthless reporter, Zoe Barnes, has been nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress, after her unfortunate – and truly shocking demise at the start of season two.
On the other side of the drama/comedy line, our favorite funny ladies aren’t backing down either. Amy Poehler and Julia Louise-Dreyfus are both up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a comedy for their work in Parks and Recreation and Veep, respectively.
Meanwhile, Orange is the New Black – Netflix’s other prodigal show – continues to be a game-changer with 12 nominations. The ever-talented creator, Jenji Kohan, along with her co-writer Liz Friedman are in the running for Outstanding Writing for a comedy; as is episode director, Jodie Foster for Best Directing. The series’ on-screen talent also received numerous nominations for best lead and supporting actresses, along with three guest actress nominations including Laverene Cox. The actress who plays inmate Sophia Burset, is the first out trans-woman to be nominated for an Emmy. OITNB will go up against Veep in several categories, including Outstanding Comedy.
Here at SharpHeels, we’ll be biting our nails up until the 66th Annual Emmy Awards premiers on Monday, August 25 8pm EST/5pm PST. Who are you rooting for?
